Many of us know the verse in Luke 10:19 that says "Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Most of the church has taken this verse at face value and says that it just means we have authority over demons and the devil. And though I have no problem with that, I still felt like we were missing something here. Could Jesus have meant more?
There is another verse we need to be more thoroughly acquainted with. Proverbs 25:2 says "It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter." If Jesus is the King of Kings, then who are the Kings He is King over? We are. So if God conceals things, then it is to our glory and honor to search for those concealed things. And where would He conceal things? I believe He could conceal something in absolutely everything He created. Which means He probably concealed some things in His Word for us to search out. So let's do some searching and uncover the matter of serpents and scorpions.
In our surface understanding of having power to tread upon these serpents and scorpions we have been doing a lot of things that haven't produced much fruit. They may have produced some fruit because the Word of God is true no matter what level you are reading it at. But if we want the glory and honor of Kings, and who doesn't want that, we have to dig deeper and uncover some some mysteries and treasures. It's time for us to see some real fruit in our lives, so let's dive in.
With our limited understanding of serpents and scorpions, the church has done an ok'ish job of binding and loosing and screaming at these serpents that they are under our feet. We have told them in a stern voice that we have power over them. But what we have failed to do is find out exactly what it is we have power over and in flailing blindly at an enemy we could not see, we have missed the mark. The mark of what? Our highest calling; which is to be Sons of God walking fully with the Mind of Christ.
So let's start with the word serpents. Serpents in Luke 10:19 is from the greek word ophis. I'm going to be general here because it goes so deep that it would take more than one blog to get it all. The first meaning of serpent is, drum roll, .....serpent or snake and regarded by the Jews as the devil. But kings don't stop there. They keep digging for the gold. Greek words don't stand alone. They come from somewhere. Sometimes they come from multiple somewheres and have been combined to create a more complex meaning. We have to dig as far back as we can to get the fullness of what God was saying here. You don't find gold laying out on top of the dirt do you? No, it is deep in the ground in caves and caverns and underground and only comes to the surface after someone digs it out or natural processes of erosion after thousands of years. So let's go deeper and find the gold. This first greek word for serpents comes from another word that contains the idea of sharpness of vision, what you look at and behold, what you gaze at with open eyes and more. I will stop there because, again, I could write a book on all the meanings. But let's shorten it to say that word serpents means what you look at, what you see with your eyes and mind, and what you give your attention to. Now that has nothing to do with the devil and everything to do with me. Okay, so let's keep going.
Now let's take a quick look at scorpions. The greek word for scorpions is skorpios, which means an animal with a poisonous sting. Just like the greek word for serpent it is straight to the point and obviously means another devil right? Let's dive in for the gold again. Going back further in the word skorpios we find that it means an observer, a watchman, or the goal or end one has in view. It is what you see is the end result of something. For example, the doctor says you have a deadly disease and will die within six months. You get your friends to pray and they bind serpents, scorpions and the devil. I'm not saying God won't heal you here, but let's take an honest look at our track record with this. And now the serpent has been bound but you still go around telling everyone you are dying. You are still in fear and worried about the doctor's prognosis. You are still observing the sickness. You are still giving your attention to a death decree. The image and thoughts in your mind are what are your children or spouse going to do when you're gone. These thoughts you have are now, according to the Bible, are serpents and scorpions. Oh wow.
Now these greek words also take some rabbit trails and a very interesting one about the word scorpions is that it is from the word skeptomai, which is where we get the word skeptic. Skeptic just means to doubt something is true or real. So this word scorpions means what we observe the end view of something to be or the way we see something playing out. In the deeper richness of it it is saying that thing you see or observe, you have to pierce the concealment of the doubt of it. The doubts that arise in you that say you are sick, you are broke, you are hopeless, these are things in your view that are causing you to be a skeptic and doubting the the Word of God that contradicts these situations. These are thoughts, images, mindsets, physical limitations that have a poisonous sting. If you keep saying that the world is falling apart and everyone is corrupt and it is only getting worse, then this is your end view, the way you see it. And if this view is not full of the life of God then you are doubting His goodness and what He can do and this negative image has a poisonous sting to it. It is a scorpion.
So let's put this all together and shorten it. What Luke 10:19 is saying to us is that God has given us the power and authority to override what you see with your eyes and what you give your attention to. You also have the power to trample on the thoughts, images, mindsets and physical limitations that have a poisonous sting. These thoughts and limitations are concealing and covering the truth. That is their sting. They keep you from seeing the truth about your situations and cause you to feel hopeless. But this verse says you have the authority over the end view! You have the authority to choose the path you walk on. You have authority to crush and trample the thoughts, mindsets, and images that you don't want. If the thought is not taking you where you want to go, then dismiss it, trample it and move on down the path. If what you are seeing is not what you want, you have the power to change it into something you do want. You get to choose your end view. You have the authority to uncover the divine things that are being concealed by what you are seeing and the poisonous sting of doubt. You have the right and authority to choose your end. The powers of the enemy in this verse just mean anything that opposes the divine government of God in you. All the places that cause you to trip up and go into despair, confusion, hopelessness, depression, anger or what ever poison they are serving up, you have power over them and they have no authority to hurt you unless you let them. You have authority over your thoughts, emotions, images in your mind, what you say and what you feel. You have power over these serpents and scorpions.
If you can grasp the fullness of what the Word of God is saying in this one verse you can change your life completely. This is how we become the Sons of God, by taking authority over our end view and by changing our perspective of life and what is around us. As we stop beating the air and fighting enemies unseen, and begin applying our authority over our own minds and thoughts, we begin overcoming the things that have held us back. It is time to renew our minds in order to transform into who God has called us to be as His Sons. It is time to Arise and Shine. Our glory has come.
