Every time you feel a resistance in your life, whether in health, relationships, finances, etc., there is a structure or belief system present that is framing up that situation, circumstance, mindset, or stronghold. Whatever you want to call it, it is bondage. It could have been created by your words or the words of others that you came into agreement with, your emotions about something, judgments you have made, or you could have inherited it. But some thing created it. Unless you confront it and dismantle it, that structure will continue to operate and keep you in bondage and confined in that place and area of your life.
In 2 Corinthians 10:4-6, Paul tells us “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Paul is speaking of these structures and belief systems that we have allowed to be built around our life that are not speaking truth.
Why would Paul tell us to pull down these strongholds and arguments and not ask God to? Isn’t that what prayer is for? Asking God to get rid of this thing? One day I was praying along those lines. You know, running down my list of things I wanted God to do for me. I’m sure you have those lists too. Then He spoke ever so clearly to me and said, “Carol, I am well able to do any one of those things at any time in a moment’s time–but there are some things I want YOU to overcome.” Oh…ok God. Guess what? Our whole journey on this planet is about overcoming trials, tribulations and the stuff that is trying to trip us up. And Paul in 2 Corinthians is telling us a way to overcome the resistance we face.
When you overcome, you are coming over those things that are speaking to you rather than allowing them to continue harassing you. These structures, or high places cause you to bow down to them. They cause you to
bow down to their will and live at the level they want you to live. You know you are bowing down to them by your words and the emotions you have when thinking of these places. These structures or strongholds only have power to the degree that you allow. When you come above it and overcome it by not allowing it to affect your words and emotions anymore, then it is rendered powerless and will be shattered and dismantled. It will lose its power over you.
Look for the places in your life where you feel resistance. You know, the places where you want to see breakthrough but you haven’t. Or the things in your life that put you on an emotional rollercoaster. Or the things you have a negative attitude about. Do not ignore them. The resistance is a sign for you that here is a place to overcome. God has already called you to overcome it. He’s already given you the authority to overcome it. But religious mindsets and an orphan mentality keep you in bondage to these structures. God did not put these trials there, but He did equip you to overcome them. To come up over them. They are lying structures. They make you believe you are helpless and can do nothing. That you are at their mercy. That all you can do is beg God to remove them from your life.
God did not create you a beggar. He did not create you to be subject to these structures. He has already overcome them. The blood of Jesus has already rendered them powerless. But it is your choice if you believe you have already overcome. It’s your choice to rise up and overcome these structures.
